Client: LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART

Project: YOSHITOMO NARA

Year: 2020

Role: EXHIBITION IDENTITY DESIGN

Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, renowned for his striking portraits of enigmatic figures, is one of the most beloved artists of his generation. His work reflects a deep introspection, with influences drawn from his memories, travels, and cultural heritage. Nara’s journey through Germany (1988–2000) and his explorations across Japan, Sakhalin, and Asia have infused his art with diverse inspirations, merging childhood memories, music, literature, and modern art from Europe and Japan.

Spanning over 30 years (1987–2020), this retrospective views Nara’s work through his lifelong connection to music. The exhibition includes a dynamic array of media: album covers he began collecting as a teen, paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, and an immersive installation replicating his drawing studio. Never-before-exhibited idea sketches reveal Nara’s empathic perspective, offering insights into his conceptual approach. A highlight of the exhibition, Miss Forest, a 26-foot painted bronze sculpture, stands along Wilshire Boulevard, marking a powerful moment in his artistic evolution.

Exhibition identity, graphics, title treatment, and didactics, with a cover feature in LACMA’s Insider magazine.
