OUTLIERS AND AMERICAN VANGUARD ART

Outliers and American Vanguard Art explores pivotal intersections between avant-garde and self-taught artists throughout American art history, marking significant moments of inclusion and integration. Organized into three parts, the exhibition covers early modernist efforts to champion folk art, the 1960s rise of outsider art advocacy, and the influence of these practices on contemporary art. Featuring over 250 works by more than 80 artists—including Henry Darger, Cindy Sherman, Bill Traylor, and Kara Walker—the exhibition sheds light on outlier influences on the American art canon.

ISAAC JULIEN: PLAYTIME

Isaac Julien’s Playtime (2014) marks the artist’s first major Los Angeles presentation. This multi-channel film installation explores the complex influence of capital in the art world through six narrative vignettes starring James Franco, Maggie Cheung, and Simon de Pury, among others. Julien’s work critiques the flow of money and its impact on the art ecosystem—production, dealing, collecting—and the lives touched by it. Playtime has shown internationally, underscoring Julien’s position as a leading voice in contemporary visual and social discourse.
